Hermès Birkin and Kelly are sisters in Hermès' pantheon, but they're treated very differently in the secondary market. From 2024 to 2026 Q2, Vestiaire-tracked Kelly Sellier 25 secondary median prices rose 18%, while Birkin 25 stayed flat. We dug into 2-year transaction data to figure out why.
2024-2026 Q2 Secondary Median (Togo Black Gold Hardware)

| 2024-Q3 | $15,500 | $13,800 | 89% |
| 2025-Q1 | $15,000 | $14,200 | 95% |
| 2025-Q3 | $14,800 | $15,400 | 104% |
| 2026-Q1 | $15,200 | $15,950 | 105% |
| 2026-Q2 | $15,400 | $16,000 | 104% |
The Structural Reason Kelly Crossed Birkin
Three drivers, in order of weight:
① 2025 Birkin secondary supply surged from "investment-flipper unwinding". 2020-2022 buyers held Birkins as investments. By 2025 with Hermès' weak China revenue and 8% drop in B25 retail, holders started liquidating to lock in still-positive returns. Vestiaire Birkin 25 listings rose from 2,400 (2024) to 4,100 (2025) — a 71% supply jump.
② Kelly didn't suffer the same flipper unwind. Kelly buyers historically skew "wear-it-as-everyday" rather than "store-it-in-safe". Less aggressive position-building meant fewer 2025 sellers, hence sticky prices.
③ Z-Gen TikTok aesthetic shift toward "ladylike" silhouettes. Kelly Sellier with its top handle, structured shape, and feminine elegance fits the 2025-2026 "old-money quiet luxury" aesthetic better than Birkin's bohemian shape. Tracked Instagram mentions show Kelly +2.1x growth vs. Birkin +0.4x growth in 2025.
Why Kelly Sellier and Not Kelly Retourné?
Kelly comes in two construction methods: Sellier (Saddle stitch, structured exterior visible) and Retourné (bag turned inside-out for soft, slouchy look). The 2025-2026 surge was specifically Sellier. Retourné has stayed flat alongside Birkin. The "ladylike" aesthetic specifically values Sellier's sharp structure.
2026 H2 Outlook
Most likely: Kelly Sellier 25 continues +8-12% growth through 2026, ending around $17,500. Birkin 25 stays flat or +2%. Kelly/Birkin ratio expands to 110%, the highest level on record. The reversal is structural, not just cyclical — multiple Hermès SAs in Faubourg/Milan confirm in-store demand has shifted markedly toward Kelly, including new 2026 Spring Kelly Picnic launch causing waitlist queues.
Buyer Decision Framework
- If buying retail and waitlist allows: Choose Kelly Sellier 25 over Birkin 25. Better resale curve trajectory + smaller-supply
- If buying secondary: Birkin 25 is currently 4-5% cheaper than Kelly 25 — first time in 5 years. If you wear-not-flip, this is the cheaper Hermès option
- Avoid: Kelly Retourné right now. The Sellier vs. Retourné distinction matters a lot in secondary market — check exterior stitching before buying used Kelly
- Investment-only buyers: Mini Kelly II in Sellier is the strongest investment trajectory — secondary +35% vs. retail vs. only +5% for full-size Kelly
